Something FISHY 'bout these Drawings / by jac lahav

Steven Weinberg Fish Watercolor!

Steven Weinberg (@steven_draws) is the jack of all trades. He draws comics for hyperallergic, cooks amazing authentic chinese food, can build a door from old cedar planks in under 20 minutes,  and illustrates childrens books with many successful titles under his belt! I first met him four years ago while living in New York's Catskill Mountains. Steven and his wife had recently moved there from Brooklyn, deciding to fulfill a dream of opening a hotel/bar in arguably the most beautiful valley ever.

In our artistic courtship I learned that Steven ALSO loooooooves trout fishing. We spent quite a few mornings, thermos in one hand, fishing rod in the other, flies hooked to our caps, while meandering the streams of paradise valley (where supposedly fly fishing was invented).

In the past 2 years Steven has been tearing up the watercolor world with paintings documenting his squirmy quarry. The greenish browns in these works belie the luminosity of scales while watery swaths of orange and blue melt into the page like the river itself. I'm amazed by these little watercolors vibrancy, and especially at how their documentary history reflects a notion of time known to both fishermen and artists alike.
